HARRISBURG, Nov. 2 – Pennsylvania House Education Committee Majority Chairman Peter Schweyer today announced both he and state Rep. Mary Isaacson have been appointed to the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
As members of the board of directors, both representatives will support the mission of the agency to provide affordable access to higher education in their respective Legislative Districts and throughout Pennsylvania. They will each serve four-year terms.
“Being both a first-generation college student and a longtime supporter of higher education, it is both a privilege and an honor to be appointed to serve in this capacity as a member of PHEAA’s board of directors,” said Schweyer, D-Lehigh. “As student loan balances continue to rise, causing significant financial impacts on thousands of Pennsylvania students, I am looking forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to find solutions and policies to provide more affordable access to higher education.”
“Since elected, I have fought for students in Pennsylvania,” said Isaacson, D-Phila.. “They should not be priced out of pursuing a degree or higher education. We need to do everything we can to ensure that Pennsylvanians who want to attend school can – and that their futures are not hindered with burdensome debt because they did. I am honored to be chosen for this role and thankful to Speaker McClinton for choosing me to be a part of this important agency.”
“Representatives Schweyer and Isaacson are trusted leaders on the education issues impacting Pennsylvania, especially on college affordability and access,” said Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Phila/Delaware. “They are well suited to serve on the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency board and ensure that the needs of Pennsylvania’s families are represented.”
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency was created by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1963 to provide affordable access to higher education for PA students and families. Through the years, PHEAA has evolved into one of the nation’s leading providers of student financial aid services, including the Commonwealth’s state-based student loan program—PA Forward. PHEAA also serves millions of students through guaranty, servicing, financial aid processing, and other programs.
