Bethlehem, PA – October 5, 2023-The Great Decisions Lecture Series is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of collaboration with YWCA Bethlehem. The series will kick off with a special free lecture and discussion taking place on Wednesday, October 18 from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Kirkland Village at 1 Kirkland Village Circle in Bethlehem.

The topic is focused on “Artificial Intelligence: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Daniel Lopresti, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Lehigh University. Dr. Lopresti will discuss how will we as individuals, communities, society and as a nation become stronger and better from AI through our communications, health care, governance and world relations. Additionally, Lopresti will explore how AI may harm us as individuals, families, society, and as a nation.

The Great Decisions Lecture Series is based on the American Foreign Policy Association’s yearly publication of essays by American foreign policy experts and is being brought to the community through a partnership between YWCA Bethlehem, the Great Decisions Lecture Series Planning Committee (composed of area citizens interested in foreign policy issues) and Kirkland Village in Bethlehem. The full eight-week foreign policy lecture series will take place on Wednesdays from February 7 through March 27 at 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Kirkland Village.

The Foreign Policy Association commissions essays on current foreign policy topics for programs that local organizations can present. The 2024 topics will include:

  • Mideast Realignment
  • Climate Technology and Competition
  • Science Across Borders
  • U.S.-China Trade Rivalry
  • NATO’s Future
