Emmaus, Pa.- Purr Haus, an Emmaus boutique that hosts weekend adoption events for 13 Lehigh Valley cat rescue groups, will celebrate the milestone of reaching 100 adoptions with a “Kitten Luau” featuring live mermaids on September 3.

Mermaid Ember (Facebook https://www.facebook.com/emberthemermaid) and friends will pose for photos from noon til 1pm in exchange for a kitten food donation. The event, which runs from noon til 4pm, will also feature adoptable kittens and tropical refreshments. More details, including a list of preferred kitten foods, is available on the Purr Haus Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076425782453)

Purr Haus owner Laurie Mason Schroeder said the event is a fun way to give back to the community and support the nonprofits who help cats in need.

“The Lehigh Valley has a serious stray cat problem, and the volunteers that we partner with are on the front lines, rescuing kittens off the street and educating the community about spaying and neutering their pets,” she said.

Mason Schroeder noted that the 2023 “kitten season” has been exceptionally challenging, as rescue organizations are still dealing with the fallout from COVID, during which stray cat sterilization services were halted. Last year’s warm winter also contributed to the crisis. A female cat can have up to four litters a year with an average of 4 to 6 kittens each time.

The majority of the rescue organizations that bring adoptable cats and kittens to Purr Haus do not have their own facilities, relying on foster homes. There is also a shortage of cat fosters this year.

Photo and video are encouraged at the event.

Purr Haus is located at 27 S. 7th Street, Emmaus (across from the CVS drive thru.)
