Bethlehem, PA – October 25, 2022 – It’s been 8 years since Service Electric’s “Team Chocolate Chip Cookies” had their first walk together to fight breast cancer. On Saturday, October 15, 2022, 40 members of the team once again walked in the Lehigh Valley’s ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ walk. The core of the team is made up of Service Electric employees who are honoring their friend and former coworker, Kathy Ruch. Kathy lost her battle with cancer in 2015, but the team continues to walk and raise money to support ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ each year.
It started in October of 2014 when Team Chocolate Chip Cookies had their first walk together to honor their friend who was, at that time, fighting another battle with breast cancer after decades of remission. The morning of that walk was sunny and beautiful with events that included an opening ceremony, photo booth, refreshments and lunch, plus a special recognition for survivors like Kathy, who made sure that every teammate received a bundle of her delicious chocolate chip cookies.
Team members were excited for the event, commenting, “Kathy was the best; she kept us on our toes, cared for us all, could laugh and cry in an instant, and was an amazing baker, friend and colleague.” Another team member said, “We are very proud to honor our SECTV sister Kathy and support an event that helps women overcome trials with breast cancer. Some of these women are SECTV employees, and we’re here to support all of them.”
So far, Team Chocolate Chip Cookies has raised more than $50,000 since 2014, including a record $7,500 in 2022. They intend to continue this tradition, raising money every year until a cure is found. The team holds fundraising events throughout the year, plus Service Electric is an event sponsor for ‘Making Strides’ and matches team donations.
