An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Sunday, January 30 from 2–4 p.m.
Nazareth, PA—The Moravian Historical Society (MHS) is pleased to announce the opening of our newest exhibition Charting the Unknown: Early Moravian Maps. The exhibition will run from Friday, January 28 through December 31, 2022.
Through archival documents, historic maps, and objects from the collection of the Moravian Historical Society, visitors will be taken on a journey through the fertile lands of the Pennsylvanian frontier. The exhibition explores surveying techniques, the conflicts between indigenous communities and Europeans, and the Moravian contributions to surveying, early cartography, and town planning. Moravians began surveying Pennsylvania in the early 1740s and their contributions to the surveying of Pennsylvania offers some of the earliest documentation of land use in the colonies during tumultuous times of war and unrest. Pennsylvania’s geography played a major role in shaping America’s history as European settlers expanded west, drawn by the promise of fertile farmlands and the prospect of untold riches.
An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Sunday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m. Susan Orr, MHS Curator of Collections, will give a gallery talk about the exhibition. The reception is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be provided.
Founded in 1857, the Moravian Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in Pennsylvania. MHS maintains the 1740–1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. The Moravian Historical Society shares the fascinating stories of the Moravians and their contributions to worldwide culture through educational programs, guided tours, engaging museum exhibits, and public activities.
Located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania the Moravian Historical Society is open every day from 1–4 p.m.
