Board to vote on appointing Dr. Marilyn Martinez to lead the district on an interim basis
ALLENTOWN, PA — The Allentown Board of School Directors has scheduled a special meeting for Monday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m., to discuss and vote on the appointment of Dr. Marilyn Martinez to serve as interim superintendent.
Dr. Martinez is an experienced educational administrator who currently works with school and district leaders to improve their systems and meet their goals. She is an adjunct instructor at Holy Family University, where she teaches graduate courses on The Principalship and Theories of Educational Leadership.
In the past, Dr. Martinez was superintendent of the Pennsauken Public Schools in New Jersey and served as interim executive dean at Camden County College. She was also an educational consultant with Norris Square Community Alliance and served in various administrative roles in the School District of Philadelphia.
Dr. Martinez holds a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, along with a master’s degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University.
In conducting its search, the board engaged the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators to post the open position. The board’s search committee then worked with PASA to review and interview interested and qualified candidates to serve on an interim basis as the board seeks a permanent superintendent.
If approved, Dr. Martinez would fill the vacancy left by current Superintendent Thomas Parker, whose last day in the district will be Friday, April 23.
Additionally, yesterday the Allentown School District issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a firm to lead the search for its next permanent superintendent. To be selected by the end of May, this firm will help the Board of School Directors move forward with the next phase of the search process.
