The Allentown Health Bureau is cancelling second COVID-19 vaccinations scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, February 23 through Friday, February 26 at the Agri-Plex at the Allentown Fairgrounds due to a lack of supply.
The Health Bureau has enough Moderna vaccine for second doses scheduled for today, Monday, February 22, but has not received its allocation for the rest of the week. Those Monday vaccinations are taking place as scheduled.
Those scheduled for their second Moderna vaccinations at the Fairgrounds on Tuesday, February 23 and Wednesday, February 24 will get them at the same time and place on Thursday, March 4.
Those scheduled for their second Moderna vaccinations on Thursday, February 25 and Friday, February 26 will get them at the same time and place on Wednesday, March 3.
Persons who submitted an email address when they registered will be notified of their new appointment. The Bureau will attempt to call but cannot guarantee that they will reach all those who submitted a telephone number.
The state Department of Health announced on Wednesday, February 17 that a “structural issue” in the rollout took root in early January when vaccine providers used doses of the Moderna vaccine as first shots when they were intended to be the second, or booster, shots.
Because of the shortage of Moderna second doses, some 30,000-60,000 second-dose appointments across the state may have to be pushed back a week or two.
Guidelines established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the “window” between the first and second shots of the Moderna vaccine at 28-to-42 days.
