Reading, PA—Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been in high demand and difficult to come by throughout the course of the pandemic, but the need for caregivers for people with disabilities is more important than ever. In order to ensure caregivers can continue to care for their consumers with developmental disabilities safely, Abilities in Motion (AIM) stepped up to fulfill a need.
Last Monday, representatives from the Schuylkill Administrative Entity of Service Access and Management, Inc. (SAM) stopped by Abilities in Motion headquarters in downtown Reading to pick up PPE supplies for 100 caregivers of people with disabilities in Schuylkill County. More PPE will follow as more bags of equipment are assembled.
Abilities in Motion is using funds distributed to the nonprofit through the CARES Act to finance PPE care packages for all caregivers of people with developmental disabilities AIM serves in Berks and Schuylkill Counties.
Joseph Salem Jr., SAM Administrative Entity Manager for Schuylkill, said that local Service Coordinators reaching out to their caseloads reported that caregivers and families in Schuylkill County were growing more nervous with the increase in COVID-19 cases and the approach of flu season, so this PPE is especially welcome to relieve much of the unease.
Abilities in Motion serves about 590 people with developmental disabilities through the Agency With Choice program, 175 of whom live in Schuylkill County. Agency With Choice encourages people with developmental disabilities to hire and schedule their own caregivers in accordance with their Individual Support Plan.
