The City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation has striped seven tennis courts to turn them into multi-use tennis/pickleball courts. Locations include three courts at Andre Reed (Irving) and four courts at Roosevelt Park.
The USA Pickleball Association states “Pickleball is a court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net set to a height of 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball and composite or wooden paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors and is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition, the game has developed a passionate following due to its friendly, social nature, and its multi-generational appeal.”
Allentown has seen an increase in the sport of pickleball with several indoor locations interspersed throughout the community. As a result of public demand, the Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation offers the only outdoor pickleball courts. With an anticipated increase in interest by persons of all ages, the Department intends to offer classes and possible pickleball tournaments in the future.
Players are encouraged to follow CDC and PA state guidelines during play.
